Father’s Heart Manual

Father’s Heart
Connie Tucker
“The Good Father unconditionally pours out affirmation, love, and encouragement in concrete ways even in the midst of discipline. He is proud of you and initiates relationship. This is the Father’s treatment of Jesus. (Matthew 3:17, Psalm 35:10, Psalm 33:22)
In this manual, Connie Tucker has put into words the importance of knowing Father’s Heart for you as His Son. We are all Sons of God, and He wants to treat us as so, as He treated Jesus. Areas she writes on are:
v Understanding Father’s heart for your life.
v How we view Him
v Understanding His character and nature
v Soaking in Father’s Love

Relationship with Father. A Father who loves and adores you just for who you are not for what you can do for Him. Just for who you are. He loves relationship! All that the Father wanted from Adam and Eve was friendship. His word says that God said to them “Tend the garden.” Then everyday in the cool of the evening Father (Papa) would come to visit and walk in the garden with Adam and Eve. Can you imagine what they may have talked about? Possibly they looked at the sunset and discussed where the sun was going! Or how the birds flew in the air.

In part one of this manual, we will discover how our earthly relationships affect our relationship with Father God… Let’s get started!
Understanding Father’s heart for our lives will be a life long journey.
As in all relationships, we are continually finding out who we are and who the person we are relating to is. It’s the same with Father God. Some of the things that I believed about God early on in my relationship with Him I don’t believe now. Why is that?
The biggest reason that our view of who God is changes is because we change. The Bible says of God “I Am God, I change not!” So we are the ones that change. Our basic view of who we think God is comes from our own earthly relationships with those of the masculine gender or our fathers.
My earthly father was a good man. He worked hard every day. I always felt well provided for. However, because he worked so hard everyday, I didn’t see much of him. So my perception of God was:
“God will always provide for me, I will never have to worry about that. However, He really doesn’t have time for me. He’s busy. He loves me, but there are other more important things on His mind.”
A lot of my early prayer times as a new believer went like this:
“God I know you’re busy… but…”
As my understanding of who God is grew (through the reading of His Word and Holy Spirit revealing Him to me) I began to find His Father heart for me. That’s what this manual is all about: His heart, His love, His desire to relate to you.
So what do fathers do for our lives?
Fathers are supposed to provide safety and security for our lives in different ways. They are to be interactive, spending time in play as children. They are to show us fatherly affection by holding us and providing a safe place for us to grow and mature in. Later on in life fathers should celebrate our achievements. Be an encourager and affirm our direction in life. However, not many of us had this type of fathering.
Is it too late?
No- it’s never too late. Father God wants this relationship with you now.
As I said earlier, most of our perceptions of God come from our male relationships as a child. Listed on the next page are the different types of father figures. Read through and see which one fits best for your life.

Absent Father:
The Absent Father is not present due to a divorce or death etc. This can result in feelings of rejection and abandonment. God feels distant and uninvolved in your life. Feelings of love may be intermittent. You feel like you have to make your own way in the world. God won’t come through for you.
Passive Father:
The Passive Father is not responsive, involved or active. He rarely pursues you. He is unemotional or withdrawn. This can result in hidden anger and difficulty getting in touch with emotions or in resolving problems. There is difficulty in receiving love and with relational intimacy.
Performance Oriented Father:
This father has high standards untempered by enough love, nurture or affection. He points to faults and failures, but rarely to your strengths and successes. Love and affirmation is expressed only when you perform well. In religious households, truth is valued above love. You feel like you can never do anything right. There is often fear of failure, an obsession with success, super spirituality, wearing religious masks and burnout.
Authoritarian Father:
The Authoritarian Father is strict and lives by the rules, so obedience is valued above relationship. Approval comes by obeying the rules. This can result in a crushed or heavy heart, deep anger, a loss of motivation, and a loss of identity. You see God as the big cop in the sky, watching to make sure that you obey the Christian rules. So it is hard to develop a relationship with God.
Abusive Father:
This father often seems to be angry. He inflicts physical, emotional, verbal or sexual abuse on family members. This creates great inner pain, fear and insecurity in your relationship with your father. It is hard to relax. You are always aware of the emotional atmosphere when dad’s around.

Let’s stop and pray here.
Father God, heal my heart. I need Your Fathering love. Come and heal me. Love me. I didn’t have a godly pattern to follow. Show me how to be Your Child, how to relate to You for I have based my relationship with you on my perception of my earthly father or step father. I’m sorry. Forgive me Father God.
I also forgive my earthly father for his ways. He did his best and I forgive him. I release him to you. Forgive me if I have held unforgiveness in my heart toward him. I repent. Heal my heart Father and reveal Your true nature to me. In Jesus name I pray, amen.

You may want to write out some thoughts concerning your earthly father on the lines below to formulate your own prayers and thoughts to Father God.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Spend time in prayer about your earthly father or stepfather. Forgive him; ask Father God to heal any hurts… learn how to spend time in His presence. Worship music is very helpful to help you to express your heart to Father God. Some recommended music for soaking in the presence of God is:
Alberto and Kimberly Rivera: “The Invitation,” “The Father Sings,” or “Captured.”
Jeremy and Connie Sinnott: “The Song of the Bride”
Kelly Warren: “Here With You”
SOAKING: A time of music. Laying your hearts and agendas down and hearing from Father, quiet music, receiving from Holy Spirit. Most people lie on the floor, put the music on and receive from God.

In Matthew chapter 6 verse 9, the disciples ask Jesus to teach them to pray. Jesus begins with Our Father (Hebrew) Abba. The term Abba was reserved in those days for earthly fathers. Papa, Abba.
In His prayer, Jesus was basically declaring a new understanding of Father God to the Jewish people. Up until then God was referred to as the great I AM, Adonai, Elohim, Hashem.
The Jewish people in Jesus’ day kept a distance from God and He was distant to them. Just as in the days of Moses in Exodus 20:18 the people were fearful of God. In Egypt, they lived a life of slavery, they had cruel leadership over them. The Egyptians were hard taskmasters over them much like the authoritarian father figure on the previous page. The Egyptians forced obedience and were strict. I believe that the children of Israel only knew this type of fathering or leading and couldn’t understand the Goodness of Father God. The people said unto Moses: “Moses you go and get the directions from God and we will obey whatever He says” for they were fearful.
So Jesus was saying in the Lord’s Prayer, The Great I Am wants to be your Abba or Papa and it’s okay to address Him as so. The Lord’s Prayer is drawing Him near to us. Jesus puts an endearment on Him.
Father is saying “I love you, I want relationship with you. I will be Your Father and you shall be my children. Draw near to Me. I want to be your Papa.”
For so long we have quoted The Lord’s prayer in a systematic way, like in a memorization type way when actually it’s personal.
Read the prayer and comprehend the italics to greater understand Father.

“Our Abba who is in Heaven. (He is mine)
Holy is Your name.
Your Kingdom come.
Your will be done.
On Earth as it is in heaven. (Be here with me)
Abba, give us today our daily bread. (Be my provider)
Forgive us our debt as we forgive our debtors. (Make things right for me)
Abba, keep me away from temptations today, (Be my cover)
And deliver me from the evil one. (Keep me safe)
For Abba,
Yours is the Kingdom
and the Power
and the Glory forever
(I acknowledge You as my All Knowing, All Powerful Papa)
Amen.

Italic formulated prayer:
Father, You are mine, be here with me. Be my provider and make all things right for me. You are my covering. You keep me safe! I honor You, You are my All Knowing, All Powerful Papa and I love You. Amen.

The apostle Paul had much training in Jewish law. The Bible says he had been instructed by Gamaliel, who was mentioned in Acts 5 and also in Acts 22 as a highly respected leader and teacher. However Paul also calls Him Papa or Abba in Romans 8:15. Paul who was a Pharisee knew the Great I Am to be Abba after his conversion.
Paul was saying in this passage of scripture: God doesn’t want servants or slaves. He wants children. Sons! “For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back again into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out ‘Abba Father!’ ”
In Galatians 4:6, Paul also said: “And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father!”
The upbringing that I received from my earthly father put empty places inside of me. I had feelings of loneliness in me. I felt like I was always waiting on something, waiting for perfect situations to happen that would bring me fulfillment. Nothing was enough! No matter where I turned for fulfillment, I was left empty. I believe that I was waiting on a father. A father that would acknowledge me, and affirm my life.
I came to Jesus and received Him as my Savior in 1982. Immediately I got busy! Within the first month of my salvation, I had volunteered at a Christian radio station. I was willing to do any job that they wanted done. I made calls, I typed letters for about two weeks (until they found out that I typed 10 words per minute) lol! Then they gave me a job producing a radio program. This was all within two months of my salvation!
My aggressive nature apparently appealed to them. But they didn’t know that I was trying to please a father. I produced the radio program for about four weeks, then the host had to leave his position and they put me in as producer and host of the radio program. After about six months, I felt God’s leading to work in my local church. So I resigned at the radio station and began to work in the bus ministry at my church. I just wasn’t comfortable being a daughter to Father… I needed to prove myself! I needed to prove that I was worth loving by Father God.
My next pursuit came after I received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. The church that I went to didn’t believe in that so I left. I needed to get involved again. I involved myself with the local Aglow Chapter. After serving there, I re-involved myself in a local church again. I became involved in the intercessor ministry… dance ministry… I also cleaned the church… Busy, busy, busyness…this busyness went on for many years I’m sad to say.
After serving in my local community as clerk treasurer and eventually Mayor of a small village in 2005, the pressures of the jobs became too much for me. So I resigned my positions and went to Toronto Airport Christian Fellowship in Toronto, Canada.
I had been to Toronto Church for conferences, and had great experiences there. But this was the first time that I participated in an extended stay there. The school was amazing! Later, TACF staff said it was one of their best one-month schools. I learned so much from some amazing teachers: Mark Virkler, Todd Bentley, Patricia King, Bill Johnson and John and Carol Arnott. The flow of God from their lives was tremendous!
The most amazing revelation that I personally received was from Father God.
On the fourth week of the school, Carol Arnott was teaching on her own experiences with her mother. She experienced a difficult childhood. During the ministry time, she began to speak about the importance of forgiving those in our lives who hurt us. Right then Father God took me to this beautiful garden; it was lovely. There were flourishing plants and flowers everywhere! The colors were so vibrant! Blues and pinks, violets and greens. It was amazing! As I gazed on the beauty, suddenly I saw this dead lifeless tree; it had no leaves and it was right in the center of my beautiful garden.
I said to the Father, “Father, why is this ugly tree right here in the middle of my beautiful garden?” He really didn’t tell me why. He said to me, “Would you like me to remove it?” I immediately said yes! For the next hour, I lay on the floor and cried and cried as the Father removed the deep roots of rejection and abandonment that I felt from the lack of fathering in my life. He also at that time removed my need to prove myself to Him. All the hurt, all the pain came rolling out. He held me and loved me and affirmed me as His child! When I arose from that encounter, I felt so confident because Father affirmed me: Father loved me and nothing else mattered.
You see as abandoned people, rejected people, we take on an orphan spirit: a spirit that desperately wants a father, someone to adopt us and show us that we are loved. We are empty until Father shows us how much we need His love. Father God wants to do that. He is not interested in our own efforts. His desire is to show us how much He loves us just the way we are. There’s no need to prove our selves. He loves us just because.
Back to Galatians 4:6 and Romans 8:14-16….. Let’s pray and ask Abba to plant His Spirit of Adoption deep into our hearts and to remove any spirits of slavery or fear out of our hearts. Heal us Abba! Also that He would send the Spirit of His Son into our hearts so that our cry is “Abba Father!” Father I choose to know You on a more personal level. Reveal Yourself to me as Abba, as Papa.
Abba, I did not receive a spirit of slavery with fear, I have received a Spirit of Adoption and You have sent the Spirit of Your Son into my heart. So I cry out to You Abba Father: may I know You deeper! Amen.
You may want to meditate on these scriptures and prayers regularly, until you feel the work of Father’s Love and Holy Spirit completing it in your life.

The Good Father:
The Good Father unconditionally pours out affirmation, love and encouragement in concrete ways even in the midst of discipline. He is proud of you and initiates relationship. This is the Father’s treatment of Jesus. (Matthew 3:17, Psalm 35:10, Psalm 33:22)
This is our Father, Our Abba!
Matthew 3:17: You are my beloved Son, and I Am well pleased with you.

Psalm 33:22: May Your faithful love rest on us, oh Lord. For we put our hope in You.
Father I pray let Your Love rest on us. Pour out Your faithful love. Holy Spirit rest. And cause us to rest in Your presence.
We need You FATHER. Amen.

Who Is God the Father of?
****The God of the Jewish people****
In the book of Exodus, Moses is born into a Hebrew family. Pharaoh had issued a decree that all male babies were to be killed. Moses’ mother puts him in a basket and sends him down the Nile River. Pharaoh’s daughter finds him and rescues him so in turn he is raised by an Egyptian mother. The scripture doesn’t record that Moses had a father. Later when Moses is grown, he sees his people mistreated and delivers a Hebrew from oppression by killing an Egyptian. In fear, he flees to the desert.
While there he has his encounter with God.
In Exodus chapter 3, Moses is tending his father-in-law’s sheep. While there, God appears to Moses in the form of the fiery angel of the Lord in the burning bush. God speaks to Moses from the bush and says: “I Am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Issac and the God of Jacob.” Also in Jeremiah chapter 31 God affirms over and over again “I Am the God of Israel”
God chose the people of Israel as His own over all other nations of the Earth. Abraham made a covenant with God and his seed after him belongs to the Lord.

****The God of the Gentiles****
In Romans 3, Paul is talking to the Romans saying “God is the God of the Jews and also the God of the Gentiles for we are justified by faith and that faith is in His Son The Lord Jesus Christ.” In John 14:6 Jesus says: “I am the Way the Truth and the Life and no one gets to the Father but through Me.”
If you have not made a confession of faith in Jesus Christ, (who gets you to Father) you can do that now…
Pray:
Lord Jesus, I want covenant with You and with Father God. You gave Your life on the cross for me so that I could know Father. Forgive my sins, save me. Wash my heart clean. I want to know You. Let’s begin to walk together. Make covenant with me. It’s in Your name I pray, amen.

****The God of Christians****
John chapter 1 is one of my favorite chapters in the Bible.
“In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God! The same was in the beginning with God. All things were created through Him.” (vs.: 10-12) He was in the world and the world was created through Him, yet the world did not recognize Him. He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him. But to all who did receive Him, He gives them the right to be the children of God.
Anyone who receives Jesus… God becomes their Father (Abba, Papa).

****The God of all mankind****
Because God made all mankind, He is Father to them….Malachi 2:10 says “Don’t all of us have one Father?” “Didn’t one God create us?” God loves us… He created us for His pleasure. We were made in His image. Just think if you made something, taking great care to create something beautiful with your hands. Would you throw it away? Would you not consider it? God is the same. He loves us. We are His creation. His word says “All who call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved.” You were called for a purpose and that purpose is for relationship.

Father (Papa) I want to set with you, I want to enjoy Your creation with You…Calm my spirit down so that I may enjoy You more fully. Let’s enjoy this walk of life together. You made me, Father. Enjoy Your creation. Let me enjoy You. Help me to stop striving. Cause me to understand that I am already accepted by You. Let’s just relate as Father to child. Amen.

Note*As Father and Creator of all mankind, Father God has reserved the right to the beginning and end of all things. In the book of Revelation chapter 20:11, The One who sits upon the throne judges all, out of the Book of Life.

THIS SECOND PART OF THE MANUAL INCLUDES A BIBLE STUDY ON ATTRIBUTES OF GOD. WE NEED TO RELEARN WHO FATHER IS. WHO FATHER GOD IS.

Early on in my relationship with God (as I mentioned earlier in this teaching), I had belief systems that were contrary to the understanding of who God really is.
This affected my Christian life in many ways. I lived a less than victorious Christian life because of what I believed. One day the Father (through Holy Spirit’s leading) spoke to me and said, “Why don’t you begin to study My character and nature in the Bible. I thought it was my idea! So I began my study. As I studied, I saw how much my belief system didn’t align with what His word said about Him.
Below are some attributes about God. This is not a complete listing, but it’s a good beginning. As you study these scriptures, may your heart be enlightened on Father’s nature and great love for you.
o II Samuel chapter 7:22 *INCOMPARABLE*
In chapter 7 Nathan the prophet comes to David and declares the word of the Lord. David’s response in verse 22 is:
“Who is like You oh Lord? For you are Great, there is none to be compared with You.”
o II Samuel chapter 7:28 *TRUTH SPEAKER*
“Lord God You are God” “Your words are true”
o Numbers 23:19 *TRUTH SPEAKER AND UNCHANGEABLE*
In the book of Numbers chapter 23 Balak hires Baalim to curse the children of Israel. Baalim only blesses the children of Israel to Balak’s displeasure.
In verse 19 Baalim declares: “God is not a man who lies, or a son of man who changes his mind.”
o Isaiah 40:13-25 *UNEQUALED*
All of Isaiah chapter 40 is a treasure trove of understanding on the Greatness of our God…
His Word stands forever. He’s full of strength and power. He protects His flock. He gently leads. He measures the water. He gathers the dust. Vs. 18: Who can you compare Him to? He has great power and strength. Vs. 28: He is the Everlasting God. He never grows tired. He strengthens the powerless. He truly is Unequaled. As you study this passage write out your own understanding of His Unequaled Greatness.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
o I Kings 8:27 *INFINITE*
In I Kings chapter 8 Solomon is dedicating the House of the Lord. Solomon speaks of the covenant between his father David and Father God. In verse 27 Solomon declares that God is so great that even though he (Solomon) has built this temple, still God is so Infinite that it could not contain Him and His Greatness!
o Isaiah 57:15 *ETERNAL*
For the High and Exalted One who lives forever, whose name is Holy says this: “I live in a high and holy place, and with the oppressed and lowly of spirit.”
This passage of scripture speaks so much about the Greatness of our God. He Is Great, yet He is willing to dwell with the lowly. His character and nature are truly defined here.
So Great is He. But humble, willing to be with all who desire Him.
o Psalm 139 *THE ALL KNOWING EVER PRESENT GOD*
Psalm 139 describes His ways. As you meditate on this passage, understand that He is with you and knows all about you, not for humiliation but for us to come to understand that He desires to be with us so completely.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
o Revelation 4:8 *HOLY*
Revelation chapter 4 talks of the throne of God and those creatures around the throne. In verse 8: “They cry out, ‘Holy, Holy, Holy are You Lord.’ ”
o I Peter 1:16 Father declares Himself as “Holy.”
o I Peter 1:17 *IMPARTIAL*
Peter declares that God the Father is impartial in His judgments upon our works.
o Psalm 89 *GOD IS DECLARED IN MANY WAYS*
Study this passage (Psalm 89:1-37) and meditate on His Greatness, write out your personal findings of who Father is through this passage.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
o Psalm 89:38-52 *JUST/ YET MERCIFUL GOD*
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
o Exodus 34:6-7 *LONGSUFFERING*
In this passage the Lord appears to Moses and declares His Longsuffering. “The Lord His name is Yahweh, He is Compassionate! Gracious, Forgiving!” This passage of scripture is much like Psalm 89.
As you study this one, notice the same form of His Mercies being displayed yet not leaving the guilty unpunished.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Here we begin to understand the character and nature of God.
When you see a theme of understanding in the Bible about a subject, it begins to bring an understanding. In this instance we can define Father’s nature. He is merciful, gracious, kind, forgiving yet judges the unrepentant. He is full of compassion, yet the consequences of the actions of the sinful will be brought forth.
o Deuteronomy 32:1-43 *JUST/YET MERCIFUL*
-The Song of Moses-
This passage covers this same theme of God being Loving, Kind, Merciful/Yet judging sin.
Write out in your own words your revelations with you and Father concerning this passage.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
o I John 4:8,16 *GOD IS LOVE*
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
o Psalm 47:2,7-8 *KING*
For the Lord Most High is Awe Inspiring! A great King over all the Earth. Sing a song of instruction for God is King over all the Earth.
o Psalm 48:1 *GREAT*
The Lord is Great and highly praised in the city of our God.
Psalm 48 is another treasure trove of understanding on our Amazing Father.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
o Psalm 59 *DEFENDER*

o Psalm 121:3-8 *PROTECTOR*

o Genesis 49:24 *SHEPHERD*

o Exodus 15:26 *HEALER*

o In Genesis chapter 18: Abraham knew Him as a Friend who sought his counsel.

o In Numbers Chapter 12: Moses knew Him as the Jealous Defender.
